What Is a WordPress Plugin Checker?
A WordPress plugin checker is a free tool that lists the plugins a WordPress website uses by scanning its public source code. Every plugin lives in a folder inside /wp-content/plugins/, and plugins that load CSS or JavaScript files reveal that folder name in the page code. The UncoverWP Plugin Checker finds those folders and matches them to known plugin names.
Which Plugins Can the Checker Find?
The checker finds plugins that load files on the public side of a site. These usually include:
- Page builders such as Elementor, WPBakery, and Beaver Builder
- SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO and Rank Math
- Form plugins such as Contact Form 7, WPForms, and Gravity Forms
- Ecommerce plugins such as WooCommerce
- Sliders, galleries, and popups that add visible features to the page
Which Plugins Stay Hidden?
Some plugins never load files on the front end, so no outside tool can see them:
- Security plugins such as Wordfence, which work on the server
- Backup plugins such as UpdraftPlus and WPvivid
- Admin tools that only run inside the WordPress dashboard
- Caching plugins that combine files, which can hide other plugin names
This is why the real plugin count of a site is usually higher than the number the checker shows.
How to Check a Site’s Plugins Manually
- Open the website, right click, and select View Page Source.
- Press Ctrl + F (Cmd + F on Mac) and search for wp-content/plugins/.
- Note every folder name that comes right after /plugins/.
- Search each folder name on wordpress.org/plugins to find the plugin.
The manual method works, but checking a large page by hand takes several minutes and is easy to get wrong.
Plugin Checker vs Theme Detector
| Question you want answered | Best tool |
|---|---|
| Which plugins does this site use? | WordPress Plugin Checker |
| Which theme does this site use? | WordPress Theme Detector |
| Is this site built on WordPress? | Either tool |
Is the WordPress Plugin Checker free?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no signup, and only reads public files that any browser already downloads.
Why does the checker show fewer plugins than the site really has?
Only plugins that load CSS or JavaScript on the front end are visible from outside. Security, backup, and admin-only plugins run on the server and cannot be detected by any external tool.
Can I see which version of a plugin a site uses?
Usually not. Most plugins do not publish their version number in the page code, so the checker focuses on plugin names.
Can a site hide its plugins?
Yes. Some security plugins rename or merge plugin files, which hides their folder names from the page source.
Does the checker work on sites that are not WordPress?
No. Plugins in this sense are a WordPress feature. If the site runs on Shopify, Wix, or another platform, the tool tells you that WordPress was not found.
